Lagos cannot become a world-class city without disciplined citizens, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said that the state’s aspiration to become a world-class city can only be achieved if residents demonstrate discipline, respect public infrastructure and comply with laws designed to promote order and sustainable development.

The governor made the remarks while reiterating his administration’s commitment to building a modern, globally competitive Lagos, stressing that government efforts alone would not be sufficient without the active cooperation of citizens.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the success of any city depends not only on the quality of its infrastructure but also on the conduct of its residents. He urged Lagosians to embrace responsible citizenship by obeying traffic regulations, maintaining environmental cleanliness and protecting public assets.

He noted that public facilities, including roads, bridges, drainage systems, parks and transportation infrastructure, require collective responsibility to ensure they remain functional and serve residents effectively.

The governor said acts such as vandalism, indiscriminate waste disposal, traffic violations and the destruction of public property undermine the state’s development agenda and increase the cost of maintaining essential infrastructure.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that cities widely regarded as global models have attained that status through a combination of effective governance, strong institutions and a culture of civic responsibility among residents.

He called on individuals, community leaders, businesses and civil society organisations to support government initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, public safety and compliance with existing regulations.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue investing in critical infrastructure, including roads, public transportation, healthcare, education and urban renewal projects, while also enforcing laws intended to improve the quality of life across the state.

He added that maintaining public infrastructure is a shared responsibility, urging residents to report acts of vandalism and other activities that threaten public facilities.

Sanwo-Olu further appealed to Lagosians to see themselves as partners in the state’s development, noting that lasting progress requires a change in attitude alongside investments in physical infrastructure.

He expressed confidence that with greater civic consciousness and adherence to the rule of law, Lagos would continue its transformation into a resilient, economically vibrant and globally competitive city.

The governor’s remarks come as the Lagos State Government continues to implement urban renewal, transportation and environmental management initiatives under its broader development agenda, while encouraging residents to play an active role in preserving public infrastructure and fostering a culture of discipline.
