Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a large consignment of suspected illicit drugs along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, arresting the driver conveying the shipment in a fresh operation against drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
The operation, carried out during a routine security patrol, resulted in the seizure of the suspected narcotics and the arrest of the vehicle’s driver, who is now in custody pending further investigation.
According to military authorities, the interception formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security along strategic transport corridors and disrupt the movement of illegal substances across the country.
The troops reportedly stopped the vehicle for a routine inspection, during which they discovered a substantial quantity of suspected illicit drugs concealed inside the vehicle. The discovery prompted the immediate arrest of the driver, while the suspected contraband was confiscated as evidence.
Military officials said preliminary investigations had commenced to determine the origin and intended destination of the consignment, as well as identify other individuals who may be connected to the suspected trafficking network.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in combating drug trafficking, organised crime and other security threats that undermine public safety and national security.
Authorities noted that the operation reflects the military’s continued collaboration with relevant security and anti-narcotics agencies to prevent criminal groups from using major highways to transport prohibited substances.
The arrested suspect is expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law. The seized drugs will also undergo forensic examination to determine their exact composition and quantity.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the illegal drug trade fuels other forms of criminality, including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence, making coordinated enforcement operations critical to national security.
The latest seizure underscores ongoing efforts by security agencies to intensify surveillance on major highways and strategic infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, to curb the movement of illicit goods and criminal elements.
The Nigerian Army has urged members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence on suspicious activities, assuring citizens that it remains committed to safeguarding lives, protecting critical infrastructure and supporting the fight against transnational and domestic crimes.
The interception adds to a series of recent operations by security agencies targeting drug trafficking networks across Nigeria, as authorities continue to strengthen enforcement measures aimed at reducing the circulation of illegal substances and bringing those responsible to justice.
