Troops hit ISWAP stronghold, neutralise cameraman and uncover foreign links

Nigerian troops have killed an alleged cameraman working for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and uncovered the presence of a foreign terrorist trainer and a medical doctor believed to be supporting the group’s operations during a series of counterterrorism operations in Borno State.

The development is seen as a significant breakthrough in ongoing military efforts to dismantle insurgent networks operating in Nigeria’s North-East and disrupt the logistical and operational capabilities of terrorist groups.

According to military authorities, the operations were carried out in parts of the Sambisa Forest and surrounding areas following intelligence-driven offensives targeting ISWAP hideouts and camps.

During the operations, troops reportedly engaged the insurgents in fierce gun battles, resulting in the death of several terrorists, including an individual identified as the group’s cameraman. Military officials said the operative was believed to have been responsible for recording propaganda videos and documenting the group’s activities for dissemination through extremist media channels.

The military also disclosed that intelligence gathered during the operations revealed the involvement of foreign nationals serving as terrorist trainers within the insurgent network. In addition, troops reportedly uncovered the activities of a medical doctor allegedly providing healthcare services to wounded fighters in the camps.

According to the military, the discoveries underscore the transnational nature of the insurgency and point to external support structures that continue to sustain terrorist operations in the Lake Chad region.

Security officials said troops recovered weapons, ammunition, communication equipment and other items during the raids, while several terrorist camps and logistics bases were destroyed to prevent their future use.

The operations formed part of sustained offensives aimed at degrading the fighting capability of ISWAP and other terrorist groups operating in Borno and neighbouring states.

Military authorities reiterated that ongoing intelligence-led operations are focused not only on neutralising insurgents but also on dismantling their recruitment networks, training facilities, propaganda units and medical support systems.

They also reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting communities across the North-East and denying terrorist groups the freedom to regroup or establish new operational bases.

Security analysts have long warned that terrorist organisations increasingly rely on specialised personnel including media operatives, trainers, logisticians and medical practitioners to strengthen their operations and maintain influence over occupied territories.

The latest operation highlights the evolving tactics being employed by security forces to target not only frontline fighters but also individuals providing strategic, technical and logistical support to insurgent groups.

Authorities urged members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence capable of aiding security operations, stressing that collaboration between local communities and security agencies remains vital to sustaining gains in the fight against terrorism.

Counterterrorism operations have intensified across Nigeria’s North-East in recent months as the military seeks to dismantle the remaining strongholds of ISWAP and other extremist groups, while restoring lasting peace and security to communities affected by years of insurgency.
