The United States has launched a new wave of military strikes on Iran, marking a significant escalation in the conflict between the two countries as renewed hostilities threaten stability across the Middle East.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that the latest strikes began at approximately 6 a.m. Eastern Time and were aimed at degrading Iranian military capabilities allegedly used to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime corridor through which a substantial share of the world’s oil exports passes.
According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted Iranian air defence systems, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile sites, command-and-control facilities and other military assets. The U.S. military said the strikes were intended to ensure freedom of navigation and hold Iran accountable for what Washington described as attacks on civilian commercial vessels in international waters.
The renewed offensive follows the collapse of an interim truce after both sides accused each other of violating ceasefire commitments. U.S. officials alleged that Iranian forces resumed attacks on merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Washington to intensify military operations and reimpose a naval blockade on Iran.
Iran condemned the latest strikes, describing them as a violation of its sovereignty. Tehran warned that it could further disrupt energy exports from the Middle East if the United States maintains its military campaign and blockade. Iranian officials also said the country remained prepared to respond to what they called continued U.S. aggression.
The renewed fighting has heightened fears of a broader regional conflict. Several Gulf countries hosting U.S. military bases have reportedly activated air defence systems following Iranian missile and drone attacks, while global oil prices have risen amid concerns that prolonged instability around the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt international energy supplies.
Diplomatic efforts to restore calm have so far failed to produce a breakthrough, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining hardline positions. International observers have warned that continued military escalation could have far-reaching humanitarian, geopolitical and economic consequences if a negotiated settlement is not reached.
