Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2031, describing such discussions as premature and insisting that his immediate priority is the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the remarks while addressing supporters in Kano, where he reaffirmed his commitment to the NDC’s presidential ticket led by Peter Obi and said the party remained focused on presenting an alternative vision for Nigeria ahead of the next election.
The former Kano State governor said conversations about the 2031 presidential race were misplaced at a time when the country faces pressing economic and governance challenges that require immediate attention.
“Our focus is 2027. Talking about 2031 now is too early,” Kwankwaso said, urging party members and supporters to concentrate on the task of securing victory in the next general election.
Kwankwaso also dismissed suggestions of any friction between himself and Obi, describing their relationship as cordial and built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to national development.
He said both leaders were working closely together to strengthen the NDC and offer Nigerians what he described as credible and inclusive leadership capable of addressing the country’s challenges.
The former presidential candidate reiterated that his decision to accept the vice-presidential nomination was driven by the need to place national interest above personal ambition, adding that the opposition ticket was united in its goal of providing effective governance if elected.
Kwankwaso’s comments come amid continued political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections, with analysts and supporters speculating about the future ambitions of key opposition figures. The NDC has repeatedly sought to project unity following the emergence of Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate.
Political observers say the latest remarks are aimed at dispelling rumours of internal rivalry within the party and reinforcing the campaign’s message of cohesion as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
