Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, has cautioned young Nigerians against relying on sports betting as a pathway to financial success, urging them instead to embrace productive work, diligence and responsible wealth creation.
Speaking during a recent sermon at Faith Tabernacle in Ota, Ogun State, Oyedepo said financial prosperity cannot be built on gambling or games of chance. He stressed that lasting wealth comes through hard work, discipline and adherence to sound principles rather than speculation or betting.
The cleric warned that many young people have become increasingly dependent on sports betting in the hope of making quick money, describing the trend as a misplaced pursuit that could undermine their future.
According to Oyedepo, “financial fortune cannot be achieved; it is entrusted,” adding that genuine prosperity is built on integrity, productivity and faithful stewardship rather than luck or gambling.
He encouraged young Nigerians to channel their energy into acquiring valuable skills, pursuing education, entrepreneurship and legitimate employment, insisting that sustainable success requires patience, commitment and consistent effort.
Oyedepo also advised the youth to avoid the temptation of seeking shortcuts to wealth, saying such pursuits often lead to disappointment instead of lasting financial stability. He maintained that productive labour remains the most reliable foundation for building a secure future.
His remarks come amid growing concern over the popularity of sports betting among young Nigerians. Industry analysts and mental health experts have repeatedly warned that while betting is a legal form of gambling in Nigeria, excessive participation can expose individuals to financial losses, addiction and other social challenges.
Oyedepo’s message adds to ongoing public conversations about responsible financial behaviour and the need for young people to pursue sustainable means of earning a living rather than depending on gambling as a source of income.
