Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi, has emerged chairman-elect of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Umahi contested the Saturday, August 22, 2026 local government election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was declared the winner after the conclusion of the exercise. Multiple Nigerian news outlets reported his emergence following the poll.
His victory has attracted attention largely because of his age and his family background. The younger Umahi, an engineer and businessman, is the son of David Umahi, who served as Ebonyi governor from 2015 to 2023 before becoming Minister of Works in the Federal Government.
During his campaign, Osborn Umahi presented himself as a representative of a younger generation seeking to bring private-sector experience, innovation and efficiency into grassroots administration.
He pledged to focus his administration on infrastructure development, youth empowerment, job creation, economic opportunities and improved public services across Ohaozara.
Shortly after his emergence, Umahi announced that he would not collect his official salary and allowances throughout his tenure as council chairman.
He said the decision was motivated by his desire to prioritise the development of Ohaozara and direct available resources towards improving the welfare of residents rather than personal financial benefits.
The chairman-elect also said his administration would seek to stimulate economic activity, improve infrastructure and create opportunities for young people and businesses in the local government.
Earlier on Saturday, after casting his vote at his polling unit in Uburu, Umahi commended the conduct of the election and expressed satisfaction with what he described as a peaceful process.
The Ebonyi local government elections were conducted amid calls for whoever emerged as chairman to govern residents without discrimination based on political affiliation.
With his emergence, attention is expected to focus on whether the 28-year-old chairman-elect can translate his campaign promises and salary pledge into tangible development across Ohaozara during his tenure.
