Army officer killed during Oyo schoolchildren rescue laid to rest in Adamawa

A Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, who was killed during the military operation to rescue abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, has been buried with full military honours in his hometown in Adamawa State.

The late officer lost his life during the early stages of the rescue mission launched after gunmen abducted pupils, teachers and other individuals from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed the officer’s death, describing his sacrifice as a testament to the courage and commitment of Nigeria’s security personnel.

The Nigerian military held a funeral ceremony in Adamawa attended by family members, military officers, government officials and residents, who paid tribute to the fallen lieutenant for his service and dedication to the country. During the ceremony, military authorities honoured his bravery and expressed condolences to his family, assuring them that his sacrifice would not be forgotten.

Lieutenant Isaac was among the personnel deployed for the intelligence-led operation that culminated in the rescue of the abducted victims after more than 50 days in captivity. According to the Federal Government, the operation led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers, while an unspecified number of others were killed. President Bola Tinubu commended the security agencies for the successful mission, describing it as a major relief for the affected families and the nation.

The abduction of the pupils in Oyo State drew nationwide attention because it occurred in Nigeria’s South-West, a region that has historically experienced fewer mass school kidnappings than parts of the North. The incident renewed concerns over the spread of kidnapping and armed violence across the country.

As tributes continue to pour in for the late officer, military authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country, while honouring personnel who make the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
