Suspected bandits have abducted seven students of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, following an attack on an off-campus student residence in the Low-Cost area on the outskirts of Kaura Namoda town.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has heightened concerns over the persistent security challenges facing communities and educational institutions in Nigeria’s North-West region.
According to reports, the gunmen stormed the students’ residence and whisked away seven occupants before fleeing the area. Local authorities confirmed the incident and said security agencies had commenced efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.
Chairman of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Mannir Haidara Kaura, confirmed the abduction and assured residents that security operatives were working to secure the release of the students.
“The incident occurred, and security operatives are currently carrying out rescue operations to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped students,” he was quoted as saying.
A student of the institution, identified in media reports as Ibrahim Ahmad, disclosed that one of the abducted students managed to escape from captivity shortly after the attack. The escape reportedly reduced the number of students still being held by the abductors to six, comprising three male and three female students.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns about insecurity in Zamfara State, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes have continued to affect communities despite ongoing military and security operations.
Residents of Kaura Namoda have repeatedly raised alarm over worsening insecurity in the area, calling for stronger measures to protect lives and property. The attack on the students has also renewed fears about the safety of educational institutions and students living off campus.
As of Tuesday evening, authorities had not announced any further rescues or arrests in connection with the incident. Security agencies, however, said efforts were ongoing to track down the abductors and secure the safe release of the remaining students.
