Veteran Nollywood actor, filmmaker and screenwriter Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died after battling stage-four cancer.
His death was announced on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an Instagram Live session. Multiple Nigerian media outlets subsequently reported the development.
The development comes days after Hassan’s family disclosed that the actor was battling advanced cancer and appealed to medical professionals and well-wishers for assistance as his condition deteriorated.
Earlier in the week, his daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had made emotional appeals for medical help, saying the family was seeking further treatment options for the veteran actor. Reports at the time said his illness had reached stage four.
The family had previously pushed back against reports of his death. On August 18, his daughter reportedly debunked the rumours, confirming that he was critically ill but still alive.
Born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, Hassan built a career spanning several decades in the Yoruba-language film industry. Daily Trust reported in 2019 that he was born in 1959, which would put his age at 66 at the time of his death.
Hassan began his acting career on stage before becoming a prominent figure in Nollywood. He was known for his work as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter and featured in several notable productions.
Among his later screen appearances was Kunle Afolayan’s 2022 epic film Aníkúlápó, in which he played Alaafin Ademuyiwa. The film earned several Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards nominations, including a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Hassan.
His death marks the loss of one of the recognisable figures of Nigeria’s Yoruba film tradition, with tributes expected from colleagues, fans and the wider entertainment industry.
Hassan’s passing also comes only days after his family publicly sought help amid his cancer battle, making the news particularly poignant for many of his supporters.
