Ebonyi commissions new basketball court, set to host South-East tournament

The Ebonyi State Government has commissioned a new basketball court as part of efforts to promote grassroots sports development and provide young athletes with improved sporting facilities.

The newly completed court is expected to serve as a hub for basketball development in the state and will immediately play host to a three-day South-East Basketball Tournament, bringing together teams and players from across the region.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, state officials said the project reflects the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and the development of sports infrastructure. They noted that investments in sporting facilities are essential for nurturing talent, encouraging healthy lifestyles and creating opportunities for young people to pursue professional careers in sports.

The South-East Basketball Tournament is expected to attract players, coaches, scouts and sports enthusiasts from the five states in the region. Organisers said the competition will provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their skills while fostering regional unity and healthy competition.

Sports stakeholders welcomed the development, describing the new facility as a significant boost for basketball in Ebonyi and the wider South-East. They expressed optimism that the court and the tournament would help identify and develop future stars capable of representing the state and Nigeria at national and international levels.

The tournament is scheduled to run for three days and will feature several matches involving male and female teams from across the region. Organisers said arrangements have been put in place to ensure a successful event and provide participants with a conducive environment for competition.

The commissioning of the court aligns with broader efforts to strengthen grassroots sports across Nigeria, where state governments and private organisations are increasingly investing in sporting infrastructure to support talent discovery and youth development.

Observers say such initiatives could play a crucial role in expanding the country’s basketball talent pool and creating pathways for young athletes to compete at higher levels.
