A potentially devastating disaster was averted in Lagos on Thursday after emergency responders successfully contained two separate fire incidents involving a gas-laden tanker in Ikotun and a supermarket in the Egbeda area of the state, with no casualties recorded.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) confirmed that the incidents were brought under control through the swift intervention of firefighters and other emergency agencies, preventing the fires from spreading to nearby buildings and vehicles.
The first incident involved a gas-laden tanker that caught fire in the Ikotun area of Lagos. Emergency personnel quickly responded to the scene, containing the blaze and averting what authorities described as a potentially catastrophic explosion. No injuries or fatalities were reported during the operation.
Hours later, another fire broke out at the electronics section of a Justrite Superstore located along Akowonjo Road in the Egbeda-Akowonjo area. Firefighters from the Abesan and Agege Fire Stations responded promptly after receiving a distress call, successfully containing the blaze before it spread to other parts of the building.
According to the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, no lives were lost in the supermarket fire. Preliminary investigations indicate that the blaze may have originated from a solar inverter system used as an alternative power source, although a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to establish the exact cause.
The incidents have once again highlighted the importance of rapid emergency response in a densely populated city such as Lagos, where fires involving gas tankers or commercial buildings can escalate quickly if not contained.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service commended the coordinated efforts of its personnel and other emergency responders, whose prompt intervention helped prevent significant damage and safeguarded lives and property.
Authorities have urged residents and business owners to observe fire safety measures, regularly inspect electrical and alternative power installations, and immediately report any signs of fire or gas leaks to emergency services to minimise risks.
