Florence Ajimobi arrives in Vienna, assumes duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria

Former First Lady of Oyo State, Florence Ajimobi, has officially arrived in Vienna to assume her duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Austria, marking the beginning of her diplomatic assignment following her appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ajimobi was received in the Austrian capital by officials of the Nigerian Embassy, who welcomed her as she formally took over the leadership of the country’s diplomatic mission in Austria.

Her arrival signals the commencement of a new chapter in Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with Austria, with expectations that she will work to strengthen bilateral relations, promote trade and investment, and deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest between both countries.

As Nigeria’s ambassador, Ajimobi will represent the country’s interests in Austria while fostering closer political, economic, cultural, and educational ties with the European nation. She is also expected to engage with the Nigerian community in Austria and promote initiatives that enhance Nigeria’s image abroad.

Diplomatic sources said the ambassador’s responsibilities will include advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, facilitating investment opportunities, supporting economic diplomacy, and encouraging partnerships in sectors such as renewable energy, technology, education, agriculture, tourism, and industrial development.

Austria, which hosts several international organisations in Vienna, including the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), remains an important diplomatic hub. As Nigeria’s envoy, Ajimobi is expected to strengthen the country’s engagement with these multilateral institutions while advancing its interests on global issues.

Ajimobi brings years of experience in public service and humanitarian work to the role. During her tenure as First Lady of Oyo State, she championed initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, healthcare, youth development, and social welfare through various intervention programmes.

Her appointment forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to reposition Nigeria’s diplomatic missions and enhance the country’s international engagement. The Tinubu administration has repeatedly stressed the importance of economic diplomacy, attracting foreign investment, expanding trade opportunities, and strengthening strategic partnerships as key pillars of Nigeria’s foreign policy.

Officials and members of the Nigerian community in Austria expressed optimism that Ajimobi’s leadership would further deepen relations between Abuja and Vienna while opening new avenues for cooperation in commerce, education, science, culture, and international development.

As she settles into her new role, expectations are high that the ambassador will leverage diplomacy to promote Nigeria’s national interests, encourage stronger bilateral collaboration, and contribute to the country’s broader foreign policy objectives on the global stage.
