Haaland fires Norway past Ivory Coast, sets up World Cup last-16 clash with Brazil

Norway booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Ivory Coast 2-1 in a hard-fought knockout clash on Tuesday, with striker Erling Haaland scoring a late winner to keep his country’s tournament hopes alive.

Norway took the lead in the first half through Antonio Nusa, who curled a superb effort into the top corner to put the Scandinavian side ahead. However, Ivory Coast responded strongly after the break and drew level in the 74th minute when Amad Diallo found the back of the net to set up a tense finale.

With extra time looming, Haaland once again proved decisive. The Manchester City forward struck in the 86th minute, converting a low cross from Patrick Berg after an impressive build-up involving Oscar Bobb to restore Norway’s lead and seal a memorable victory.

Ivory Coast pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages, but Norway defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland making a crucial late save to preserve the advantage and secure what was the nation’s first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match.

The result sends Norway into the Round of 16, where they will face five-time world champions Brazil in one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage. Brazil advanced after overcoming Japan 2-1 in their Round of 32 encounter.

Norway coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team’s resilience after the match, while Haaland celebrated with supporters following another match-winning performance that further underlined his importance to the national side.

The victory keeps Norway’s World Cup dream alive as they prepare for a formidable test against Brazil, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
