The Kano State Government has distributed working tools to 1,900 butchers across the state as part of efforts to improve productivity, enhance hygiene standards and strengthen the livestock and meat processing sector.
The empowerment programme was launched by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration through the Kano State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the livestock industry. The initiative is aimed at supporting butchers with essential equipment to improve their operations and promote safe meat handling practices.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony in Kano, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Danjuma Mahmoud, said the intervention reflects the state government’s commitment to improving livelihoods and modernising the meat value chain.
He explained that the beneficiaries received items including sharpening steels, aprons, boots, knives and other essential working tools designed to enhance efficiency and ensure compliance with hygiene and food safety standards.
Mahmoud urged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the equipment, noting that the initiative is expected to improve the quality of meat processing while reducing health risks associated with poor handling practices.
He added that the government would continue to introduce programmes aimed at supporting farmers, livestock producers and other actors across the agricultural value chain to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities.
Representatives of the butchers’ association commended the state government for the intervention, describing it as timely and beneficial to members of the profession.
They pledged to use the tools responsibly and to adhere to improved hygiene practices in slaughterhouses and meat markets across the state.
The Kano State Government said the empowerment programme forms part of its broader agenda to strengthen agriculture, enhance food security and improve public health through better standards in meat production and distribution. Officials also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting small businesses and artisans as part of efforts to drive economic development and improve the welfare of residents.
