Katsina United defender Chinedu Ozor has been confirmed dead following a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes in Katsina.
Ozor reportedly collapsed during the match at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was subsequently pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The incident initially triggered confusion within the Nigerian football community after reports emerged that Ozor showed signs of movement after his body had been taken to a mortuary.
According to earlier reports, medical personnel at Katsina General Hospital noticed movement while the player was at the morgue, prompting him to be taken back to the hospital and placed in intensive care. He was reportedly put on oxygen as efforts were made to stabilise him.
However, Katsina United has now clarified that Ozor did not regain consciousness and has confirmed his death.
In a statement issued by the club’s media directorate, Katsina United said reports claiming that the defender had “come back to life” were false.
The club explained that Ozor’s family, devastated by the incident and hoping that he might still be alive, requested further medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue.
According to the club, the additional confirmation should not be interpreted as evidence that Ozor regained consciousness.
Katsina United urged the public and media organisations to stop circulating unverified reports about the circumstances surrounding the player’s death, stressing that the speculation had added to the pain of his grieving family, teammates and friends.
Ozor collapsed during Katsina United’s pre-season encounter with Niger Tornadoes as the club prepared for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season.
He had only recently joined Katsina United after previously featuring for clubs including Kano Pillars and Heartland. His death therefore came as a major shock to the Nigerian football community.
Following the initial reports of his death, several clubs and football stakeholders had released condolence messages before the subsequent reports about movement at the mortuary created uncertainty over his condition.
The Nigeria football community was left anxiously awaiting clarification as conflicting reports circulated about the player’s status.
Katsina United’s latest statement has now sought to put an end to the speculation, confirming that the player died following the medical emergency.
Ozor’s death has once again raised concerns about the availability and adequacy of emergency medical facilities at football venues in Nigeria.
The incident comes against the backdrop of previous cases involving Nigerian footballers who collapsed during matches or training sessions.
The death of Chineme Martins, a Nasarawa United defender who collapsed during an NPFL match against Katsina United in 2020, had similarly triggered calls for improved medical preparedness at football grounds.
The Nigeria Football Federation subsequently directed that league venues should have the required medical equipment and personnel available before matches are allowed to proceed.
The latest incident has renewed calls for football organisers and clubs to ensure that players have immediate access to qualified medical personnel, emergency equipment and appropriate healthcare facilities during matches and training sessions.
Ozor’s death has prompted mourning among his former clubs, teammates and supporters, who have expressed condolences to his family.
Katsina United described the incident as a tragedy and urged the public to allow his family and teammates the space to grieve.
The club also called for the player to be remembered with dignity rather than through unverified accounts of the circumstances surrounding his death.
