Lagos plans flexible rent payment system with monthly, quarterly options

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a more flexible rent payment system that will allow tenants to pay rent monthly, quarterly, or annually, with one year set as the maximum advance payment duration.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the financial pressure associated with yearly rent payments, particularly for low-income earners in the state. The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed the development during a ministerial press briefing held in Ikeja as part of activities marking the anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

According to the commissioner, the proposed system is designed to give residents more flexibility in meeting rental obligations and to reduce the burden of sourcing large lump sums for annual rent payments. He explained that the idea followed the success of the state’s rent-to-own housing initiative, which allows beneficiaries to make an initial five per cent payment and spread the balance over several years.

Akinderu-Fatai said the government was engaging landlords, estate agents, developers, and other stakeholders in the real estate sector to address challenges that could affect the implementation of the policy. He noted that consultations were ongoing to ensure a smooth rollout of the scheme.

The Lagos State Government has also reiterated that the planned rent structure would cap rent payments at a maximum of one year. Officials said the move is intended to curb arbitrary charges and excessive advance rent demands often faced by tenants in the state.

The proposed reform comes amid growing concerns over rising housing costs and increasing rent demands across Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, where rapid population growth and urban migration continue to put pressure on housing availability.
