The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has agreed to review the suspension of six students sanctioned over their involvement in a protest and the alleged unauthorised dissemination of official university information on social media.
The development follows intervention by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which had strongly condemned the disciplinary action and threatened a peaceful protest at the institution on Monday, June 8.
The six students were suspended for four semesters after the university’s Senate approved recommendations from its Student Disciplinary Committee. The sanctions stemmed from protests held in February 2026 over the relocation of the Departments of Anatomy and Physiology from the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences. One of the students was also accused of leaking official university information on social media.
According to reports, NANS described the punishment as excessive and argued that the affected students were exercising their right to peaceful protest. The student body called for an immediate review of the suspensions, dialogue between university authorities and the students involved, and an end to what it described as intimidation of students raising legitimate concerns.
The controversy generated widespread reactions within the academic community, prompting NANS South-West to announce plans to engage the university management and other stakeholders. The association maintained that constructive dialogue, rather than punitive measures, would better address the issues that led to the protest.
With the university now set to review the disciplinary verdict on Monday, affected students and stakeholders are awaiting the outcome of discussions between LAUTECH management and NANS representatives.
The review is expected to determine whether the suspensions will be upheld, reduced, or reversed, as calls for a resolution through dialogue continue to grow.
