Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez has rejected what he described as an “anti-Argentina campaign” following the national team’s controversial run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, insisting there is “no real reason” for the criticism directed at the reigning Copa América champions.
Martinez’s comments come in the wake of Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, a tournament during which Lionel Scaloni’s side faced widespread criticism over its physical style of play and several on-field incidents that culminated in a post-match altercation after the final whistle. FIFA has since opened an investigation into the brawl involving players and coaching staff from both teams.
Speaking to French outlet Foot Mercato, the Manchester United defender dismissed suggestions that Argentina had become a team many football fans wanted to see lose.
“An anti-Argentina campaign? I’m a little annoyed, because they have no real reason to hate us,” Martinez said.
He also rejected accusations that the Albiceleste had displayed arrogance during the tournament.
“They say we are arrogant, but that reflects their reality more than it reflects ours. We have always respected all our opponents,” he added.
Argentina’s campaign attracted intense scrutiny after several controversial moments, including repeated disciplinary incidents during the final against Spain. The match ended in chaotic scenes following the final whistle, prompting FIFA to launch disciplinary proceedings to determine whether sanctions are warranted.
Martinez, who was forced off through injury during the World Cup final, also addressed the criticism in a social media statement earlier in the week, writing: “The fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre,” a remark widely interpreted as a response to those celebrating Argentina’s defeat.
Despite missing out on a second consecutive World Cup title, Argentina reached back-to-back finals after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Martinez insisted the squad remains proud of its achievements and maintained that the criticism levelled against the team is unjustified.
The defender’s remarks have fuelled further debate among football fans, with supporters arguing that Argentina has been unfairly targeted, while critics maintain that the team’s conduct during the tournament contributed to the backlash.
