Political economist and activist Pat Utomi has announced that the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) is developing an independent election result transmission system ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections as part of efforts to enhance transparency and protect votes.
According to Utomi, the proposed platform will allow election results from polling units across the country to be transmitted in real time and made available for public monitoring. He said the coalition intends to provide access to both local and international media organisations, including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera and other major Nigerian news platforms, to strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
Utomi said the initiative is designed to address concerns about result manipulation during collation and to ensure that polling unit outcomes can be independently tracked and verified. He argued that technology-driven monitoring would help improve transparency and reduce disputes over election results.
The former presidential adviser also disclosed that the coalition plans to deploy a nationwide network of polling unit agents to monitor voting and safeguard results at the grassroots level. According to him, the agents would help protect votes and support election officials in carrying out their responsibilities without intimidation or interference.
The announcement comes amid growing national debate over electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 polls. Several political parties and civil society groups have recently called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide stronger assurances regarding real-time result transmission and electoral transparency.
The NDC, which was officially registered by INEC earlier this year, has been stepping up preparations for the next general elections through internal reforms, screening exercises and nationwide party activities.
While details of the proposed transmission platform have not yet been released, Utomi said the coalition would continue refining the system before the 2027 elections. The plan is expected to generate further discussion among political stakeholders, election observers and regulatory authorities as preparations for the polls gather momentum.
