Vietnamese authorities have arrested a Nigerian national in connection with a cross-border drug trafficking operation that saw 2 kilograms of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected heroin bricks smuggled from Laos into Vietnam concealed inside household appliances.
The suspect, identified as Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, a Nigerian national born in 1983, was arrested on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City as he was collecting a package containing the drugs, according to the customs control team under the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX in Vietnam’s central Quang Tri province.
The operation was first uncovered at the Lao Bao International Border Gate, a key crossing point between Laos and Vietnam. At around 8:30 p.m. on August 5, customs officers inspecting a road vehicle entering Vietnam from Laos flagged suspicious images in a consigned package using scanning equipment.
A subsequent physical inspection revealed the drugs had been hidden inside electric water heaters and other electronic components, apparently to disguise them from detection.
Suspecting the case involved transnational trafficking, the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX directed its control team to lead an investigation in coordination with several other agencies: the Lao Bao border gate’s customs branch, the drug-related crimes investigation police division of Quang Tri Police, the anti-smuggling investigation sub-department, and the provincial Border Guard.
After several days tracing the consignment across multiple locations, officers arrested Odionye in Ho Chi Minh City on August 9 as he took possession of the package.
According to authorities, Odionye admitted the package contained drugs and said he had been hired to receive it in Ho Chi Minh City and then transport it onward to Hanoi.
Investigators say the case has been expanded as they work to identify other individuals who may have been involved in the trafficking network.
Vietnam maintains some of the world’s toughest anti-narcotics laws. Under Vietnamese law, individuals convicted of possessing or trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin or 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine can face the death penalty. Several foreign nationals, including other Nigerians, have previously been sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking offenses involving similar quantities.
