The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to harnessing innovation, digital skills, and emerging technologies to accelerate Nigeria’s transition into a globally competitive digital economy.
The agency said the commitment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the broader vision of positioning Nigeria as a leading digital economy through investments in technology, innovation, capacity building and digital infrastructure. NITDA noted that digital transformation remains a critical pillar for driving economic growth, improving public service delivery and creating opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
Speaking on the agency’s strategic priorities, NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, emphasized the importance of equipping citizens with relevant digital skills to take advantage of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics and data-driven innovations. He stressed that technology should be viewed as a tool for socio-economic development and national competitiveness.
According to the agency, several initiatives have been introduced to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, including the establishment of digital learning centres, technology hubs and training programmes aimed at enhancing digital literacy and fostering innovation across the country. NITDA said these programmes are designed to empower young Nigerians with skills that will enable them to participate effectively in the global digital economy.
The agency also highlighted the role of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the implementation of Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy as part of efforts to encourage research, innovation and the adoption of emerging technologies across key sectors of the economy.
NITDA’s renewed focus on digital skills development complements broader federal initiatives such as the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme, which aims to train millions of Nigerians in technical and digital competencies by 2027. The programme is expected to strengthen the country’s technology workforce and position Nigeria as a major exporter of digital talent.
The agency further noted that collaboration between government institutions, the private sector, academia and development partners remains essential to achieving sustainable digital transformation. Through such partnerships, NITDA said it hopes to drive innovation-led growth, enhance productivity and increase Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global technology landscape.
As Nigeria continues to expand its digital infrastructure and invest in technology-driven solutions, NITDA maintained that innovation, skills development and the adoption of emerging technologies will remain central to the country’s economic transformation agenda and long-term development goals.
