The Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 39 suspects following a crackdown on an organization accused of operating an illegal paramilitary-style training network in the state.
The suspects were apprehended during a raid on a training facility operated by a group identified as Uniquely Network Rescue Services, which authorities say was conducting unauthorized security training and recruiting young people without the required licence.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mrs. Geraldine Abetianbe, said the operation was carried out on May 29 following intelligence reports about the group’s activities. According to her, the raid led to the arrest of 17 members of the organization and 22 new recruits.
Abetianbe said operatives also arrested the group’s Uyo coordinator and recovered several items, including wooden guns, uniforms, training manuals and membership forms. The suspects are currently undergoing profiling and investigation to determine the purpose of the training programme and whether any criminal activity was planned.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the organization allegedly operated without a Private Guard Company licence as required under the NSCDC Act. Authorities also said the group’s headquarters is located outside Akwa Ibom State.
The commandant expressed concern over the nature of the training, warning that the use of wooden guns and rigorous paramilitary drills could potentially serve as a cover for the formation of militia groups. She noted that security agencies could not ignore such activities, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
“The Corps strongly condemns the activities of this illegal outfit,” Abetianbe said, adding that the NSCDC would continue to take proactive measures against groups operating outside the law. She also reminded the public that the corps remains the statutory agency responsible for licensing, regulating and monitoring private guard companies in Nigeria.
The NSCDC urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and ensure that young people are not lured into organizations with questionable motives. The command further stated that suspects found culpable would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
