Obi, NDC leaders stress unity as party primaries approach

Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), including the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, have called on aspirants who participated in the party’s recently concluded primaries to accept the outcome of the exercise and remain committed to the party’s broader objectives.

The appeal followed the completion of the NDC’s nationwide primaries, which attracted a large number of aspirants seeking tickets for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party officials said the primaries were conducted as part of efforts to build a strong opposition platform capable of competing effectively in the next electoral cycle.

Speaking after consultations with party stakeholders, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, urged participants to place the collective interest of the party above personal ambitions. He stressed that internal democracy inevitably produces winners and losers, but noted that the success of the party would depend on the willingness of members to remain united after the contest.

Obi also reportedly encouraged aspirants and their supporters to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, describing party unity as essential to the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 elections. He called on members to channel their energies toward voter mobilisation, policy engagement, and strengthening the party’s structures nationwide.

The appeal comes amid reports of unofficial primary results circulating on social media. In response, the NDC distanced itself from the purported results, insisting that only its National Executive Council (NEC) has the authority to ratify and officially announce the outcome of the primaries. The party urged members and the public to disregard unverified lists and await formal communication from its leadership.

According to the party, the NEC convened meetings to review reports from across the country and address issues arising from the primary elections before releasing the final list of candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Party officials said the process was designed to ensure transparency and fairness in the nomination exercise.

Political observers say the ability of the NDC to manage post-primary grievances and maintain cohesion among its members could prove crucial as political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections. With Peter Obi already confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate, attention is now shifting to how effectively the NDC can consolidate support and present a united front in the months ahead.
