Oyo Abduction: LAUTECH Governing Council Chairman visits rescued pupils, teachers

The Chairman of the Governing Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Prof. Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, has visited the pupils and teachers rescued from captivity following the school abduction in Oyo State, assuring them of comprehensive medical care and psychosocial support.

Prof. Oyelaran-Oyeyinka paid the visit at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso, where the rescued victims are receiving treatment and undergoing medical evaluation after spending 56 days in captivity.

During the visit, the council chairman commended the efforts of security agencies involved in the successful rescue operation, describing the safe return of the victims as a major relief for their families, the state, and the nation.

He also praised the Oyo State Government for its commitment to ensuring the victims receive immediate medical attention and appropriate rehabilitation following their ordeal.

Addressing the rescued pupils, teachers, and healthcare personnel, Prof. Oyelaran-Oyeyinka assured the victims that the hospital would provide comprehensive healthcare services, including physical examinations, psychological counselling, and trauma management, to aid their recovery.

He noted that experiences such as prolonged captivity often leave lasting emotional and psychological effects, making holistic rehabilitation essential alongside medical treatment.

According to him, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital has the capacity and expertise to provide the specialised care required to help the victims regain their physical and emotional well-being.

The council chairman encouraged the victims to remain hopeful, assuring them that every effort would be made to support their recovery and facilitate their reintegration into their families, schools, and communities.

He also commended the medical personnel attending to the rescued victims, urging them to continue providing compassionate and professional care throughout the rehabilitation process.

The rescued pupils and teachers were brought to the hospital after they were formally handed over to Governor Seyi Makinde by security agencies following a coordinated rescue operation involving the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies.

Their release ended weeks of anxiety for families and residents after the victims were abducted from a school in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

While celebrating the successful rescue, Prof. Oyelaran-Oyeyinka expressed sympathy to the family of the teacher who lost his life during the abduction, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the need to strengthen security around educational institutions.

He called for sustained collaboration among governments, security agencies, school authorities, and local communities to prevent similar attacks and ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning.

The visit underscored the commitment of LAUTECH and the Oyo State Government to supporting the rescued victims beyond their release, with a focus on restoring their health, addressing the trauma of captivity, and helping them return to normal life.

Medical officials have indicated that the pupils and teachers will remain under close observation until they are certified fit to reunite fully with their families and resume their normal activities.
