Eric Chelle has apologised to Nigerians following the Super Eagles’ failure to achieve key objectives at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
Speaking amid growing scrutiny over his future, the Super Eagles coach acknowledged the disappointment of fans and admitted that the team fell short of expectations despite showing signs of progress during his tenure.
“I want to apologise to Nigerians,” Chelle said, expressing regret over the team’s inability to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and its failure to win the AFCON title.
The Malian tactician, who was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation in January 2025, was tasked with revitalising the national team and leading Nigeria’s qualification push for the World Cup. However, the Super Eagles missed out on a place at the tournament after an inconsistent qualifying campaign.
Nigeria also fell short of lifting the AFCON trophy, although the team managed to finish third after securing a bronze medal at the continental competition. Despite criticism from some supporters, Chelle maintained that the squad made progress and remains capable of competing at the highest level.
Addressing speculation surrounding his future, Chelle said he hopes to remain in charge of the Super Eagles and continue building the team ahead of future competitions.
“I want to stay and continue the work,” he said, adding that he remains committed to improving the squad and delivering success for Nigerian football.
His comments come amid reports of uncertainty over his contract, with several media outlets linking the coach to possible exit discussions following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. However, officials of the Nigeria Football Federation have repeatedly expressed confidence in Chelle and indicated that he remains part of the federation’s long-term plans.
The coach’s future is expected to remain a major topic of discussion as Nigerian football authorities assess the team’s recent performances and prepare for upcoming international fixtures.
