ABISUGA LASUSU VICE PRESIDENT TASKS SCHOOL MANAGEMENT ON STUDENTS RELATION Moyosore Abisuga the 36th Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU) Vice President, a fresh graduate-Bsc Communication and media studies has urged the managements of the institution to maximize on the gains of yesteryears and improve on interfacing the students through their governing body. To upcoming female students her charge remains focus maintenance, while building competence and chasing dreams with a clear vision of targeted heights. Ayoyinka Adesanya brings Excerpt. Que. As you graduate today kindly reflect on the past experience and the journey so far. It has been extraordinary and examplary, it has been transformative, it has taught me about self conviction, responsibility and discipline. Que. What are the leagcies built as the 36th LASUSU Vice President? Aside from being the most publicly and socially interactive Vice President, I also hosted the first of its kind intervasity social debate which involved students coming from different universities competing against each other. This is something that has actually been done but it’s been roughly five to six years it was reintrodced to LASU, so I take pride in being the one to do that. I have hosted many programmes aside from my intervasity debate. I have also been very friendly and interactive with the students. There is a particular status quo that comes with the office of the vice president, meaning that they barely interact with the public it has always being the President doing that but I made a promise to myself that it wasn’t going to be so in my case, I am going to be just interactive as any other president. Que. Checking through your target list, would you say you did exhaust it all, or are there still some other items left untouched and why? There is actually a lot I would have done but due to the short academic calendar, I couldn’t do as mch as I could have wanted to, I have wanted to do a lot more of empowerment programmes especially for ladies, I would have done enlightening programmes such has history and documentary, bringing out the beauty and the fascinating nature of Nigerian polity and history to the students of the university. Que. As a female in the leadership cadre amongst students, what kept you going? Firstly as a female you will always be seen as threat to people that have insecurity, low self esteem. It shouldn’t be your defining factor, you should always be yourself, you should always stick to your morals and what you stand for. Don’t let anybody change that about you. Que. Will you say the existing situation as regards student relationship with the school management is topnotch? I feel like the school management should actually listen to the students instead of just taking up vague and surface level issue. They should actually go in deeper into student issues, their root causes and how it can be tackled from the grassroot, creating more interface with student governing body won’t be a bad idea. Que. Far away from what happens to be the norms in LASU previously, the academic calendar is seemingly now stable, what would you say informed this change? For the academic calendar I actually loved the fact that LASU’s academic calendar is quite timely, I am graduating in 2026, so roughly now it is around three years for a supposedly four years course. So, I think that is good if it can be sustained, if they keep to that same timeline and they tried not to rush students. In as much as keeping to time is good, it is important too not to rush students because of academics performance and all those financial burdens. Que. Going forward what is the outlook like? I would actually love to go into more of the creative aspect doing more of online social engagements, influencing, creating contents. I am also a lover of arts, music, traveling, fashion, so, these are the things I would like to go into. Que. Given your involvement in student unionism, is politics in your radar as you move ahead? When I was in 100 level I have always said I was not going to be interested in politics and here I am. I don’t know what the world has in stock for me so I am opened to politics, I am opened to appointment, I am opened to working with bigger mentors, being in the bigger game and seeing everything for what it is. Que. What will be your counsel to upcoming ones right within walls of this citadel of learning? I will just say that don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams, fear something that stops a lot of people from achieving their dreams before they even start it. So, I would advise that don’t give up on yourself, believe in yourself even when nobody believes in you and always know that whatever you are afraid of doing, you should definitely do it, because even if you fail you get back up and you try again and again till you get it right.
