President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday received the President-elect of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, at the State House in Abuja, ahead of her inauguration as the association’s 33rd president.
Badejo-Okusanya, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was accompanied on the courtesy visit by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Caleb University, Prof. Foluke Dada-Lawanson; President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Ezinwa Okoroafor; the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Lead of the NBA Women Forum, Hadiza Afegbua; and Ramlat Ridhwan, Publicity Lead of the BBold campaign team.
The visit comes weeks after Badejo-Okusanya made history by emerging as the first woman to be elected president of the NBA in the association’s history. She secured victory in the NBA’s national election held on July 19, 2026.
Although she is the first woman elected to the office through a competitive election, Badejo-Okusanya is the second woman to lead the NBA after Priscilla Kuye, who served as president from 1991 to 1992 following her emergence under the association’s leadership process at the time.
Badejo-Okusanya is expected to assume office from the outgoing NBA President, Afam Osigwe, during the association’s Annual General Conference scheduled to hold in Enugu next month. She will begin a two-year tenure at the helm of Nigeria’s foremost legal professional body.
Her election has been widely hailed as a landmark moment for gender inclusion within the legal profession, with many lawyers and stakeholders describing it as a significant milestone in the NBA’s more than six-decade history.
The courtesy visit to the Presidency is one of several engagements ahead of her formal inauguration, as she prepares to lead the association on issues relating to legal practice, justice sector reforms, the rule of law and the welfare of legal practitioners.
