Funke Adejumo encourages married men to prioritise balance over people-pleasing
Prominent Nigerian cleric Pastor Funke Adejumo has advised married men against overburdening themselves in an attempt to constantly satisfy their wives, saying that no man can completely meet a woman’s ever-evolving desires.
Speaking during a recent marriage teaching, the founder of the Funke Felix-Adejumo Foundation encouraged husbands to be responsible and loving partners while cautioning them against living under unnecessary pressure to fulfill every expectation.
According to Adejumo, women naturally appreciate change and often desire improvements in different aspects of life, making it unrealistic for men to believe they can satisfy every expectation at all times.
She noted that many husbands work tirelessly to provide for their families but sometimes become emotionally and physically exhausted because they feel compelled to continuously meet new demands.
“Don’t exhaust yourselves trying to please women,” she said, explaining that women often desire change and may continue to seek improvements even after previous needs have been met.
The pastor clarified that her remarks were not intended to discourage men from caring for their wives or neglecting their responsibilities. Rather, she urged husbands to strike a healthy balance between providing for their families and taking care of their own physical, emotional, and financial well-being.
Adejumo also encouraged couples to embrace open communication and mutual understanding in marriage, stressing that successful relationships are built on partnership rather than unrealistic expectations from either spouse.
She advised wives to appreciate their husbands’ efforts and recognize the sacrifices many men make to support their families, while urging husbands to continue demonstrating love, commitment, and responsibility without placing themselves under excessive pressure.
The marriage counsellor, who is widely known for her teachings on family life and relationships, has frequently emphasized the importance of mutual respect, effective communication, and emotional support between spouses.
Her latest remarks have generated widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians expressing differing opinions. While some agreed that men should avoid placing undue pressure on themselves to satisfy every expectation, others argued that both husbands and wives should work together to build healthy, balanced relationships founded on understanding and compromise.
The comments add to ongoing conversations about marital expectations, gender roles, and the importance of maintaining emotional and financial balance within the family.
