The Anambra State Government has sealed several student hostels, churches, and a market in Awka South Local Government Area over alleged violations of environmental sanitation regulations, as part of its renewed efforts to promote public health and enforce environmental laws across the state.
The enforcement exercise, carried out by officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) and other relevant government agencies, targeted premises found to have failed to comply with the state’s sanitation standards. Authorities said the action was necessary to address poor waste disposal practices, environmental degradation, and other conditions considered harmful to public health.
Among the affected properties were student hostels, places of worship, and a market, all of which were reportedly found to be operating in unsanitary conditions. Government officials stated that repeated warnings had been issued to occupants and operators of the affected facilities before the enforcement exercise was carried out.
According to the state government, maintaining a clean and healthy environment remains a priority, particularly in densely populated areas such as Awka South, where improper waste management poses significant health and environmental risks.
Officials explained that the exercise forms part of a broader campaign to ensure compliance with environmental sanitation laws and encourage residents, business owners, institutions, and religious organizations to adopt proper waste management practices.
The government emphasized that no individual or organization is exempt from environmental regulations, stressing that churches, educational facilities, commercial establishments, and residential buildings must all comply with sanitation requirements.
Authorities urged operators of the sealed facilities to address the identified sanitation deficiencies and meet the required environmental standards before seeking approval for the reopening of their premises.
Residents were also encouraged to support the government’s sanitation drive by properly disposing of waste, keeping their surroundings clean, and complying with environmental guidelines designed to safeguard public health.
The state government reiterated that routine inspections and enforcement operations would continue across Anambra to ensure strict adherence to environmental sanitation laws. It warned that additional facilities found violating the regulations would face similar sanctions.
The latest enforcement action underscores the government’s commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment while reinforcing compliance with environmental protection policies throughout the state.
