Former Royal Antwerp forward Victor Udoh dies in Abuja

Nigerian football has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of 21-year-old forward Victor Udoh, a rising talent who had represented clubs across Belgium, England, and the Czech Republic. Udoh reportedly died in Abuja on Sunday night while on holiday in his home country, and was found dead the following morning after spending time with friends.

The Nigeria Football Federation expressed shock on Tuesday over the death of the young footballer. Early indications suggest possible food or drink poisoning, although authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, and investigations are ongoing.

Udoh began his football journey with Hypebuzz FC in Abuja before securing a move to Belgian side Royal Antwerp in 2023. He quickly made an impression in the Belgian club’s reserve side, scoring 12 goals in 21 matches for the Young Reds, and his pace, direct running, and ability to operate across the frontline soon pushed him into the senior squad.

His performances in Belgium attracted wider attention and eventually earned him a move to Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He spent only a brief period at the club, featuring in eight matches for the under-21 side in Premier League 2 without making a senior appearance, before leaving by mutual consent in search of regular playing time. He subsequently joined Czech second-tier side Dynamo České Budějovice in October 2025, signing a contract through 2028.

Royal Antwerp released a statement expressing condolences to his family and loved ones: “Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”

Southampton also offered their condolences, with the club stating: “The thoughts of everyone at Saints FC go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.” La Liga side Sevilla also joined the tributes, saying: “We join the rest of the footballing world in mourning the death of Nigerian footballer Victor Udoh.”

Udoh’s death comes barely one month after the passing of former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo, deepening grief within the Nigerian football community. The heartbreaking news has sparked emotional conversations online, with many Nigerians calling for proper investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the cause of death. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.

May Victor Udoh rest in peace.
