The Nigeria Police Force has rescued a woman who was allegedly chained and held in captivity for 16 months in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in a disturbing case that has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over human rights abuses.
Police authorities disclosed that the victim was found in deplorable conditions during a coordinated operation carried out by security operatives following credible intelligence reports from concerned residents.
According to police sources, the woman had reportedly been restrained with chains and confined in a secluded location for more than a year, enduring severe physical and psychological trauma. Preliminary investigations suggest that she was subjected to inhumane treatment throughout the period of her captivity.
The operation, which led to her rescue, was conducted by officers attached to the FCT Command. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the victim chained and visibly weakened. She was immediately freed and taken to a medical facility for urgent treatment and evaluation.
Authorities confirmed that several suspects linked to the incident have been arrested and are currently in police custody. Investigators are working to establish the circumstances that led to the prolonged confinement, as well as the specific roles played by each suspect.
A senior police official described the incident as “deeply troubling and unacceptable,” stressing that no individual has the right to subject another person to such degrading treatment under any circumstance.
“The victim has been rescued and is receiving the necessary medical attention. We have taken several suspects into custody, and a comprehensive investigation is ongoing to ensure that everyone involved is brought to justice,” the official said.
The police further assured the public that the case would be pursued diligently, emphasizing their commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and upholding the rule of law.
Human rights advocates have condemned the incident, calling for swift prosecution of the suspects and stronger measures to prevent similar abuses. They noted that cases involving unlawful confinement, particularly of women and individuals with mental health challenges, remain a serious concern in parts of the country.
Residents of the area where the victim was rescued expressed shock over the revelation, with many questioning how the alleged captivity went unnoticed for such an extended period.
Meanwhile, social welfare agencies have been urged to provide the victim with comprehensive support, including medical care, psychological counseling, and rehabilitation services to aid her recovery from the ordeal.
The police have appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report cases of abuse, unlawful detention, or suspicious activities within their communities, stressing that timely information can help prevent tragedies and safeguard vulnerable individuals.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, while the rescued woman continues to receive care and support from relevant authorities.
