The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has deployed more than 1,000 young professionals into its workforce following the successful completion of a rigorous one-year internship and training programme, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to strengthen its talent pipeline and build capacity for the country’s energy sector.
The deployment forms part of NNPC Ltd.’s broader human capital development strategy aimed at equipping young Nigerians with technical expertise, leadership skills and practical industry experience to support the transformation of the national oil company.
According to the company, the programme provided participants with intensive hands-on training across various operational and business units, exposing them to key aspects of the oil and gas value chain before their integration into the workforce.
NNPC said the initiative reflects its commitment to nurturing the next generation of energy professionals capable of driving innovation, operational excellence and sustainable growth in Nigeria’s petroleum industry. The company has consistently described talent development as a critical pillar of its long-term strategy following its transition into a commercially driven limited liability company under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The newly deployed employees are expected to contribute across several business segments, including upstream, midstream and downstream operations, as well as corporate services, engineering, finance, information technology and other specialised functions.
Industry observers say the recruitment exercise is one of the largest workforce development initiatives undertaken by NNPC Ltd. in recent years and underscores the company’s focus on developing indigenous expertise to meet the evolving demands of Nigeria’s energy industry.
NNPC’s careers framework includes internship opportunities, graduate programmes and its flagship Young Professionals Development (YPD) Programme, which combines technical training, mentoring and career development to prepare future industry leaders.
The deployment comes as the national oil company continues to pursue reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, boosting oil and gas production, expanding domestic refining and gas infrastructure, and attracting investment into Nigeria’s energy sector. Under Group Chief Executive Officer Bashir Bayo Ojulari, NNPC has also highlighted human capital development as a key driver of its transformation agenda.
