ADC names Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate for 2027 presidential election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 presidential election.

The development marks a significant milestone in the opposition party’s preparations for the next general election and is expected to reshape the political landscape as parties begin positioning for what is anticipated to be a fiercely contested race for the presidency.

In a statement issued by the party leadership on Monday, the ADC said the decision followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.

According to the party, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects its commitment to presenting a united opposition front capable of offering Nigerians an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 polls.

The announcement comes weeks after Atiku and Amaechi contested the party’s presidential primary, where the former vice president emerged as the ADC’s standard-bearer.

The primary contest was one of the most closely watched events within the opposition camp, with Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen also seeking the party’s ticket.

Although concerns were reportedly raised by some aspirants following the exercise, party leaders embarked on reconciliation efforts aimed at preserving unity within the ADC and strengthening its chances ahead of the general election.

Political observers believe the emergence of Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate is the culmination of those efforts and demonstrates the party’s determination to consolidate support across different regions of the country.

Analysts have described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic alliance that combines political experience, regional balance, and extensive grassroots networks.

Atiku, a former vice president from Adamawa State in the North-East, remains one of Nigeria’s most recognizable political figures, having contested for the presidency on multiple occasions.

Amaechi, on the other hand, is regarded as one of the most influential politicians from the South-South region. He served two terms as governor of Rivers State and later as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw several major rail and infrastructure projects under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The combination is expected to strengthen the ADC’s appeal across key voting blocs in both northern and southern Nigeria.

Speaking after his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku stressed the need for opposition unity, arguing that divisions among opposition parties could undermine efforts to provide effective democratic competition.

He said the country faces significant economic and security challenges that require urgent attention and pledged that the ADC would present policies focused on economic recovery, job creation, infrastructure development, and improved security.

Party officials said the selection of Amaechi was influenced by his extensive administrative experience, national political profile, and ability to mobilize support in strategic regions of the country.

The choice of Amaechi is also expected to intensify political competition in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.

Amaechi has remained a dominant figure in Rivers politics and has maintained a long-running political rivalry with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Political analysts believe the rivalry could play a significant role in shaping voting patterns and political alignments in the South-South ahead of the election.

The ADC National Working Committee disclosed that a formal unveiling of the Atiku-Amaechi ticket will take place in Abuja later this week.

The event is expected to bring together party leaders, coalition partners, and supporters from across the country, while also providing an opportunity for the presidential candidate and his running mate to present their vision and policy direction for Nigeria.

With the 2027 election cycle gradually gathering momentum, the announcement positions the ADC as a key opposition force and sets the stage for what is likely to be an intense political contest in the months ahead.
