Trump considers replacing US 250th anniversary concerts with speech after artists pull out

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering cancelling a planned series of concerts marking the 250th anniversary of the United States and replacing them with a major speech or political rally after several artists withdrew from the event.

The concerts are part of the “Great American State Fair,” a 16-day celebration scheduled to run from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event is being organised by Freedom 250, a public-private initiative established to help coordinate activities for America’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

The planned entertainment programme has faced growing uncertainty after a number of performers announced they would no longer participate. Artists including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and The Commodores said they were withdrawing, with some claiming they had been misled about the event’s political associations.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump suggested the concerts might no longer be necessary if more performers continue to leave the lineup. He proposed replacing the music events with what he described as an “AMERICA IS BACK” rally and indicated he could personally address attendees instead.

According to reports, Trump argued that his appearance could attract larger crowds than the scheduled entertainment programme and said officials were examining the feasibility of changing the format of the celebrations.

The controversy has intensified debate over whether the anniversary celebrations are genuinely nonpartisan. Several artists who withdrew said they had originally agreed to participate because they believed the event would celebrate all Americans rather than be associated with a political movement or party.

Despite the withdrawals, organisers have said the Great American State Fair is still expected to proceed, featuring state pavilions, cultural exhibitions, rides and other attractions stretching from the US Capitol to the Washington Monument. Trump is currently scheduled to help launch the celebrations at the end of June.

Freedom 250 has not publicly announced whether the concert series will be formally cancelled or replaced, but the departures have raised questions about the final shape of one of the centrepiece events planned for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
