Trump claims U.S. intervention stopped attacks on christians in Nigeria

United States President Donald Trump has claimed that American military operations have brought an end to the killing of Christians in Nigeria, crediting U.S. intervention with improving security in parts of the country.

Speaking during an address to religious conservatives at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference, Trump said the U.S. military had intervened in Nigeria to protect Christian communities facing attacks from extremist groups.

“The U.S. military went into Nigeria, and we stopped the killing of Christians,” Trump said while highlighting his administration’s foreign policy and religious freedom agenda.

Trump’s remarks follow months of heightened U.S. engagement with Nigeria’s security challenges. In late 2025, he threatened military action over what he described as the mass killing of Christians in the country, and later authorized U.S. strikes against Islamic State-linked militant targets in northwestern Nigeria. He has since maintained that the operations significantly weakened the terrorist groups responsible for attacks.

However, independent assessments have not confirmed Trump’s assertion that the killings have ended. Security analysts and Nigerian officials have consistently described the country’s insecurity as a complex conflict involving insurgency, banditry, communal violence and criminality that affects both Christians and Muslims, depending on the region.

The Nigerian government has previously rejected claims that Christians are being systematically targeted nationwide, arguing that terrorist groups attack civilians regardless of religious affiliation. Officials have instead called for international cooperation in combating terrorism while maintaining that Nigeria’s security challenges should not be viewed solely through a religious lens.

Trump’s latest comments are likely to reignite debate over the impact of U.S. military involvement in Nigeria and the broader security situation in the country, where authorities continue operations against insurgent and terrorist groups in several regions. While U.S. officials have acknowledged cooperation with Nigerian security forces, there has been no official confirmation that violence against Christian communities has been completely eliminated.
