Rescued Eda Oniyo worshippers to receive free medical care, says Oyebanji

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has directed that all victims recently rescued from captivity following the abduction at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) prayer ground in Eda Oniyo receive free medical treatment and comprehensive health screening.

The governor’s directive comes in the aftermath of the successful rescue of the worshippers, who were kidnapped during a deadly attack on the church on April 28, in which the presiding pastor was fatally shot by armed assailants.

According to the Ekiti State Government, the rescued victims will undergo thorough medical examinations and receive all necessary treatment at no cost to assess their physical and psychological well-being after spending time in captivity.

Governor Oyebanji said the intervention was part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the victims recover fully from the trauma they endured. He noted that beyond their physical health, the victims may require emotional and psychological support to help them reintegrate into their families and communities.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the security agencies whose coordinated efforts led to the successful rescue of the abducted worshippers. He commended their professionalism and dedication, describing the operation as a significant step in the state’s ongoing fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes.

While sympathising with the families affected by the attack, Oyebanji reiterated his condolences over the killing of the church pastor, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the need for sustained efforts to strengthen security across the state.

He assured residents that his administration would continue working closely with security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering, improve surveillance, and respond swiftly to criminal activities.

The governor further reaffirmed his commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that the state government would not relent in supporting security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating within and around Ekiti State.

The victims were abducted when armed men invaded the Christ Apostolic Church prayer ground during a night vigil in Eda Oniyo, opening fire on worshippers before abducting several members of the congregation. The attack generated widespread condemnation and prompted an intensive rescue operation by security agencies.

The Ekiti State Police Command later confirmed that the victims had been rescued by security operatives, although investigations into the attack remain ongoing. Authorities have also vowed to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face justice.

Medical experts note that victims of kidnapping often require comprehensive post-rescue care, including physical examinations, trauma counselling, and mental health support, due to the emotional and psychological effects associated with prolonged captivity.

Governor Oyebanji’s directive has been welcomed by residents and community leaders, who described the free healthcare initiative as a compassionate response to the victims’ ordeal. Many expressed hope that the intervention would aid their recovery while reinforcing public confidence in the government’s commitment to the welfare of citizens affected by violent crime.

The latest development underscores the Ekiti State Government’s resolve to combine security measures with humanitarian support, ensuring that victims of criminal attacks receive the care and assistance needed to rebuild their lives after traumatic experiences.
