Vance criticises US detractors during America’s 250th Independence anniversary

United States Vice President JD Vance has criticised what he described as persistent attacks on America’s history and identity, saying some critics focus exclusively on the nation’s shortcomings while ignoring its achievements.

Vance made the remarks on Saturday during a speech aboard the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence. The event formed part of nationwide commemorations of the country’s semiquincentennial.

In his address, Vance said some people “will talk about America’s sins with the anger and zeal of a prophet,” arguing that they fail to acknowledge the country’s progress and accomplishments over the past 250 years. He urged Americans to adopt a more balanced view of their history, recognising both past mistakes and national achievements.

The vice president said the United States had consistently demonstrated resilience and innovation, describing the country’s history as one marked by the pursuit of freedom and opportunity despite its imperfections.

“Today, we celebrate 250 years of America facing the future without fear,” Vance said, calling on citizens to remain optimistic about the nation’s future and to reject narratives that, in his view, portray the country solely through the lens of its historical failings.

Vance’s comments come amid ongoing political and cultural debates in the United States over how the nation’s history should be taught and commemorated. Discussions surrounding issues such as slavery, racial inequality and the legacy of the country’s founding have remained prominent in public discourse, particularly during the anniversary celebrations.

The July 4 celebrations featured military displays, public ceremonies and fireworks across the country, with President Donald Trump also participating in events commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Vance concluded his remarks by encouraging Americans to take pride in their country’s history while continuing to work toward a stronger future, saying the anniversary should serve as a reminder of the nation’s enduring ideals and shared aspirations.
