Morocco produced a clinical second-half performance to defeat co-hosts Canada 3-0 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the hosts’ historic campaign in Houston on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions, who became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2022, advanced to the last eight for the second consecutive tournament with a composed display after weathering sustained Canadian pressure in the opening half.
Canada started brightly, creating several early chances and forcing Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into important saves. However, Jesse Marsch’s side failed to capitalize on its dominance and went into the break level at 0-0.
Morocco broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half through Azzedine Ounahi, who finished a well-worked free-kick routine involving Achraf Hakimi. Ounahi doubled the lead in the 82nd minute after being set up by Brahim Diaz, before substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal on a swift counterattack.
The result sent Morocco into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between France and Paraguay. The victory also made Morocco the first African nation to reach the World Cup quarter-finals in back-to-back tournaments, underlining the team’s continued rise on the global stage.
Despite the defeat, Canada’s campaign marked a significant milestone for the co-hosts. The North Americans reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history and recorded their first-ever World Cup victory during the tournament, achievements viewed as important steps in the country’s football development.
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his players for remaining composed under pressure before taking control of the contest in the second half. Canada coach Jesse Marsch, meanwhile, expressed pride in his team’s progress despite the elimination, saying the experience would serve as a foundation for future success.
