Witness tells court Emefiele’s aide delivered billions in cash for deposit

A prosecution witness in the ongoing alleged N7.8 billion fraud trial involving former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has told the Federal Capital Territory High Court that he deposited billions of naira in cash on behalf of the former apex bank chief.

The witness, identified as Richard Agulu, testified on Tuesday before Justice Yusuf Halilu while appearing as the third prosecution witness (PW3) in the case.

During his testimony, Agulu told the court that the cash deposits were made following instructions linked to Emefiele and that the funds were delivered to him by Eric Ocheme, whom he identified as the former CBN governor’s personal assistant.

According to the witness, Ocheme regularly brought large sums of cash, which he subsequently lodged into designated accounts. He said the transactions involved billions of naira over a period of time.

Agulu’s testimony formed part of the prosecution’s effort to establish the movement of funds allegedly connected to the charges against the former CBN governor.

Emefiele is facing trial over allegations bordering on criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, forgery, and the unlawful acquisition of properties, among other offences. The charges, which involve an alleged N7.8 billion fraud, were brought by the prosecution following investigations into his activities while serving as CBN governor.

The former CBN governor has pleaded not guilty to the charges, maintaining his innocence since the commencement of the trial.

During the proceedings, the prosecution continued to lead evidence through its witnesses in an attempt to substantiate the allegations contained in the charge.

The defence is expected to cross-examine the prosecution witness as the trial progresses, after which the court will continue hearing additional evidence from both parties.

The case remains one of several legal proceedings involving Emefiele following his suspension and subsequent removal from office as CBN governor.

Justice Halilu adjourned the matter to a later date for the continuation of trial, as the court continues to hear evidence from witnesses presented by the prosecution.

The proceedings are being closely watched because of Emefiele’s former position as head of Nigeria’s apex bank and the broader implications of the case for financial accountability and public sector governance.
