The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has announced an extension of the registration period for the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for Private Candidates, 2025 Second Series.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Council said the new registration deadline is now Friday, September 19, 2025, two weeks later than the initial closing date of September 5, 2025.
“The registration period for CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2025–Second Series has been extended to Friday, September 19, 2025. All prospective candidates are admonished to make good use of this opportunity,” WAEC stated.
The Second Series CB-WASSCE is distinct from the traditional May/June WASSCE for school candidates, as it is tailored for private candidates and conducted in the latter part of the year.
WAEC introduced the computer-based examination format in 2024, initially using a hybrid model where questions were displayed on computer screens but answers were written on paper.
The system was designed to gradually ease candidates into digital testing while allowing WAEC to assess its feasibility.
For the 2025 Second Series, the Council has fully transitioned to a computer-based examination format, signaling a major step toward its goal of adopting digital testing for all examinations by 2026.
WAEC said it is investing in infrastructure upgrades, personnel training, and digital resources to ensure examination centers across Nigeria are equipped for the transition.
In April, the Council also launched the WAEC E-Study Portal (waec.estudy.ng), a digital platform providing access to past questions, marking schemes, examiners’ reports, and personalized performance insights. The initiative aims to help students prepare effectively while aligning learning resources with real exam standards.
WAEC has emphasized that the shift to computer-based testing will strengthen the integrity of its assessments, curb malpractice, and bring the examination process in line with global best practices.
With the new registration deadline, thousands of private candidates across Nigeria now have additional time to complete their applications for the 2025 CB-WASSCE Second Series.
