The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports circulating on social media that it called for the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The football governing body clarified its position on Saturday, saying it had neither asked nor was asking Infantino to step down as president of the world football governing body.
In a statement posted on its official X account, the NFF said, “Contrary to reports, especially on social media, @thenff has never asked and is not asking for @FIFAcom President, Mr. Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA PRESIDENT.”
The federation described the reports as “outright falsehood” and urged the public to disregard them.
The clarification comes amid growing controversy surrounding Infantino’s leadership of FIFA following the collapse of a proposal to sell private investors stakes in the commercial rights associated with the World Cup.
The controversy has triggered criticism from several football associations, particularly in Europe. On Friday, the president of the Norwegian Football Federation, Lise Klaveness, publicly called for Infantino’s resignation, arguing that he no longer had the institutional trust needed to lead FIFA.
Klaveness said Norway would not support Infantino in the next FIFA presidential election, scheduled for March 2027, and called for governance reforms within the organisation.
The Norwegian federation’s position, however, is separate from that of the Nigeria Football Federation, which has now expressly distanced itself from reports that it supports calls for Infantino to resign.
The NFF’s clarification comes as football governing bodies and national associations continue to take different positions on Infantino’s leadership ahead of the next FIFA presidential election.
