Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have confirmed that a drone strike caused a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday, raising fresh concerns over the security of critical infrastructure in the Gulf region.
According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, multiple unmanned aerial vehicles crossed into the country’s western airspace during the early hours of the day. Air defence systems reportedly intercepted two of the drones, while a third struck an external electrical generator located outside the plant’s secured perimeter.
Emergency response teams quickly contained the resulting fire, and officials said there was no damage to the nuclear reactors or critical operational systems.
The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) stated that the incident did not compromise the safety or functionality of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant.
“All units continue operating normally and safely,” the agency said in a statement, adding that no injuries or radiation leaks were recorded.
The Barakah facility, located in the Al Dhafra region, is the UAE’s first nuclear power plant and currently supplies a significant portion of the country’s electricity needs.
The incident immediately drew attention from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which expressed concern over attacks involving critical civilian infrastructure.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said the agency was closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with Emirati authorities.
The strike is being viewed by analysts as a potentially dangerous escalation, particularly given ongoing regional tensions and security concerns surrounding key energy infrastructure across the Gulf.
Although UAE authorities condemned the attack as an act of aggression, officials stopped short of publicly identifying those responsible.
The incident comes amid heightened instability in the Middle East and renewed tensions involving strategic maritime and energy corridors, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Security analysts say the targeting of a facility linked to civilian energy production marks a significant development in the region’s evolving security landscape.
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was developed as part of the UAE’s long-term energy diversification strategy and was built using South Korean reactor technology.
The facility plays a major role in reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels and contributes substantially to national electricity generation.
Following the incident, Gulf security agencies reportedly increased alert levels around key infrastructure installations as investigations into the attack continue.
