Fresh fears over school security have gripped parts of Nigeria after the Department of State Services (DSS) issued an intelligence alert warning of a planned mass abduction of students in Edo State, prompting immediate government action, including the closure of several schools.
The Edo State Government ordered the shutdown of three secondary schools in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following what officials described as credible intelligence of a planned attack targeting schoolchildren in the area.
According to security documents and government statements, the DSS alert, circulated to security agencies including the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), indicated that suspected armed groups were allegedly planning to target schools in Edo North Senatorial District. Authorities said the decision to close the schools was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent a possible security breach.
The affected schools were directed to suspend academic activities indefinitely, while arrangements were made for students, including those writing ongoing examinations, to be safely escorted under security supervision.
Security agencies have since increased surveillance around vulnerable school communities, with patrols intensified and intelligence operations stepped up to detect and disrupt any potential threats. Officials also said inter-agency coordination had been strengthened to ensure rapid response in the event of any attempted attack.
The development has renewed public concern over the safety of educational institutions in Nigeria, where school abductions have remained a recurring security challenge in recent years. Experts note that such intelligence alerts, even when preventive, often reflect ongoing risks posed by armed criminal groups who increasingly target schools for ransom.
In response, parents and education stakeholders have expressed concern but also support for the precautionary closures, describing them as necessary to protect children amid rising insecurity in some parts of the country.
The Edo State Government urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, assuring that efforts were underway to restore normal academic activities once the threat level is deemed under control.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing while security deployment around schools in high-risk areas has been reinforced.
The DSS alert adds to a growing list of security advisories across the country, underscoring continued concerns over the vulnerability of schools to armed attacks and the urgent need for sustained protective measures for students and educators.
