El-Rufai granted ₦ 100m bail as court imposes strict conditions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in the sum of ₦100 million, with one surety in like sum, following his arraignment on charges bordering on alleged national security breaches and unlawful wiretapping.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik delivered the ruling on Monday after the Department of State Services (DSS) filed a multi-count amended charge against the former governor.

Although bail was granted, the court imposed stringent conditions that must be fulfilled before El-Rufai can be released.

The judge ruled that the surety must be a resident of Abuja and own landed property in either the Maitama or Asokoro districts. The original Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the property must also be deposited with the court registry.

In addition, the surety is required to be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17, and must present a valid tax clearance certificate covering the past six months, alongside verification from their government office and authenticated salary records.

El-Rufai was also ordered to submit an attestation letter from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council and surrender all international passports to the court.

As part of his bail conditions, the court directed the former governor to report monthly to the DSS headquarters in Abuja on the last Friday of every month at 10:00 a.m. to sign an attendance register.

Justice Abdulmalik warned that any violation of the conditions would result in immediate revocation of bail.

Given the sensitivity of the case, the court also ordered an accelerated hearing.

The charges form part of broader legal challenges facing El-Rufai, who is also being prosecuted separately by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged abuse of office and financial misconduct during his tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023.
