Eligible Facebook users receive bonus payouts

Meta Platforms has begun issuing supplementary payments to eligible claimants as part of the $725 million settlement reached in a class-action lawsuit over Facebook users’ privacy.

Settlement administrators recently confirmed that additional funds are being distributed to qualifying claimants after the initial round of payments was completed. The supplementary payments are being sent to eligible U.S. Facebook users who filed valid claims before the deadline and met the settlement requirements.

The settlement stems from a lawsuit alleging that Facebook shared users’ personal data with third parties without proper consent. The case was closely linked to concerns raised by the Cambridge Analytica data-harvesting scandal, which brought increased scrutiny to the social media giant’s privacy practices.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, agreed to pay $725 million to resolve the lawsuit in 2022. While the company denied wrongdoing, it opted to settle the case rather than continue lengthy litigation.

The settlement covers Facebook users in the United States who maintained an active account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022. Initial payments were distributed to approved claimants in 2023 and 2024, with the amount each individual received depending on the number of valid claims submitted and the length of time they had maintained a Facebook account.

According to settlement administrators, the latest round of payments represents additional funds that became available after the resolution of outstanding administrative matters related to the case. Eligible claimants are receiving the supplementary payments through the same payment methods selected during the claims process, including direct deposit, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, prepaid cards, or mailed checks.

The settlement remains one of the largest privacy-related payouts in U.S. history and underscores the growing legal and regulatory scrutiny facing major technology companies over the collection, use, and protection of personal data.

Individuals who submitted claims can obtain updates and verify payment information through the official settlement website. Administrators have advised recipients to remain alert to potential scams and rely only on official communications regarding the settlement.
