Danish football star Christian Eriksen is recovering in hospital after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, prompting the abandonment of the match and sparking concern across the football community.
The 34-year-old midfielder fell to the ground in the 65th minute of the game in Odense after appearing to clutch his chest. Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch to attend to him as players from both teams formed a protective circle around the scene. The match was subsequently called off. Reports indicated that Denmark was leading 2-1 at the time of the incident.
The Danish Football Association later confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and, under the circumstances, doing well,” the federation said in a statement. Medical staff subsequently transported him to a nearby hospital for further examinations.
Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, said Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly and was able to walk off the pitch on his own before being taken to hospital.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” Boesen said, adding that Eriksen’s implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) appeared to have functioned as intended. Further tests are being conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
The collapse brought back memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match against Finland at the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament in June 2021. On that occasion, he received life-saving treatment on the field before later being fitted with an ICD, which allowed him to resume his professional career.
Messages of support quickly poured in from teammates, clubs, fans and football organizations around the world. Eriksen, who currently plays for German club VfL Wolfsburg, has remained one of Denmark’s most influential players and was making his 151st appearance for the national team when the incident occurred.
Denmark coach Brian Riemer and captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg praised the swift response of medical personnel and thanked supporters for their concern. Authorities have not yet provided further details on the cause of the collapse, pending the outcome of medical evaluations.
The football world continues to await updates on Eriksen’s condition, with initial reports indicating that he is stable and recovering under medical supervision.
