Former Chelsea captain and Spain international César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a decorated career that spanned two decades across Europe.
The 36-year-old defender confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message shared on social media, stating that the time had come to begin a “new chapter” after more than 20 seasons in professional football.
Azpilicueta enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career at Chelsea, where he made more than 500 appearances and captained the club to several major honours, including the UEFA Champions League title in 2021.
During his 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge, the Spanish defender won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two Europa League trophies, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the League Cup, becoming one of the club’s most decorated modern-era players.
Azpilicueta began his professional career with Osasuna before moving to Olympique de Marseille in France. He later joined Chelsea in 2012 and went on to establish himself as a fan favourite because of his consistency, leadership, and versatility in defence.
After leaving Chelsea in 2023, he spent time with Atlético Madrid before concluding his career in Spain.
On the international stage, Azpilicueta earned 44 senior caps for Spain national football team and represented his country at multiple FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships.
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, former teammates, and clubs across Europe, with many describing him as one of the most respected defenders of his generation.
