Four soldiers, civilian killed in insurgent attack on Borno community

At least four soldiers and one civilian have been killed following an ambush by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Mussa community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack, which occurred late Wednesday, involved heavily armed militants who reportedly arrived in gun trucks and launched a coordinated assault on a military checkpoint and nearby residential areas.

Local sources said the troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted for over an hour. Despite resistance from security forces, four soldiers were confirmed killed during the initial exchange of fire.

A civilian, identified as a farmer returning home at the time of the нападение, was also caught in the crossfire and died from gunshot wounds. Several other residents sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in nearby Lassa.

The latest violence comes amid a renewed wave of attacks in parts of Borno State, a region that has experienced prolonged insurgency. Security incidents in recent days have raised concerns about escalating militant activity, including reported attacks on military formations and civilian communities.

Military sources indicated that reinforcements from the 28 Task Force Brigade have been deployed to the affected area, with ongoing clearance operations aimed at tracking down the fleeing insurgents. Air support has also reportedly been engaged, with claims that several militants were neutralised during follow-up operations.

Mussa, located near the fringes of the Sambisa Forest, has remained vulnerable due to its strategic position and proximity to insurgent hideouts. Residents and local leaders have repeatedly called for strengthened security presence and improved surveillance to prevent recurring attacks.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing the incident, but security operations in the area are ongoing as tension remains high among residents.
