IGP tells Governor Adeleke police received intelligence that suspects are hiding in Osun government house

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed that police intelligence suggested some suspects were allegedly hiding within the Osun State Government House, a revelation he said was communicated to Governor Ademola Adeleke during heightened political tensions in the state.

Speaking in a video that has circulated online, the IGP said the information was relayed to the governor after the Commissioner of Police in Osun State briefed police headquarters on intelligence gathered during ongoing security operations.

According to the police chief, the Commissioner of Police informed him that certain individuals being sought by law enforcement were allegedly taking refuge inside the Government House. The IGP said he subsequently contacted Governor Adeleke to notify him of the intelligence and discuss the security situation.

The disclosure comes against the backdrop of political disputes and security concerns in Osun State, where law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to prevent violence and maintain public order.

While addressing the issue, the IGP stressed that the police remain committed to carrying out their constitutional responsibilities without fear or favour. He noted that intelligence reports are routinely investigated and that appropriate action is taken based on available evidence and in accordance with the law.

The police chief also reiterated the need for cooperation between security agencies and government officials in tackling crime and ensuring that no individual or institution is used as a safe haven for persons wanted by law enforcement.

Although the allegation has attracted public attention, the police have not publicly identified the suspects or disclosed the specific offences for which they are being sought. Likewise, no official evidence has been released to substantiate the claim that the individuals were inside the Government House.

As of the time of this report, the Osun State Government had not issued a formal response to the allegation contained in the IGP’s remarks.

Political observers say the development is likely to heighten public interest in the ongoing security and political situation in the state, with calls for transparency and due process in the handling of any investigation.

The Nigeria Police Force has maintained that its operations are guided by the rule of law and urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and allow security agencies to carry out their duties professionally.

The latest disclosure underscores the sensitive nature of intelligence-led policing and the importance of verifying allegations through thorough investigation before drawing conclusions. It also highlights the need for continued collaboration between security institutions and government authorities in preserving peace and upholding the rule of law.
